About this position

The Department of Engineering Cybernetics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD Candidate in Underwater Foundation Models. This position is part of the Norwegian Centre for Embodied AI (NCEI), a national initiative uniting leading robotics and AI groups to advance the science of embodied intelligence. The successful candidate will join the Autonomous Robots Lab (ARL) under the supervision of Professor Konstantinos Alexis, contributing to the development of novel foundation models for underwater robot perception and navigation.

The project aims to push the boundaries of robot autonomy by creating scalable neural architectures and simulation tools that generalize across air, ground, and marine robot embodiments. Key research areas include modeling light effects underwater, developing high-quality synthetic and real underwater datasets, and ensuring unified modeling approaches for diverse robotic systems. The work will leverage NTNU's extensive underwater robotics infrastructure and strong collaborations with industry, research institutes, and public agencies.

Applicants should hold a Master's degree in cybernetics, control systems, or a closely related field, with strong training in robotics, computer vision, or machine learning. A solid academic record (B or better on the NTNU scale) is required, and candidates must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program. Preferred qualifications include expertise in robot perception and navigation, modern machine learning, programming (C++ and Python), ROS, robotic simulators, and mathematical formalism. The working language is English, and all application materials must be submitted in Norwegian, a Scandinavian language, or English.

The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800 (subject to qualifications and seniority), with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. The employment period is three years, and the position is conditional on external funding. NTNU provides a supportive, international research environment, career guidance, and access to world-class facilities. The university values diversity and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds.

To apply, submit your application via Jobbnorge.no by 1 February 2026, including transcripts, diplomas, CV, a motivation letter, and contact information for at least two referees. For more information about the doctoral program, visit the NTNU website. The position is based in Trondheim, a vibrant city known for its technological innovation, high quality of life, and excellent public services.
