About this position
The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, offers a PhD position focused on the dynamic structural organization of electrospun biobased nanocomposites under uniaxial and biaxial extension. The research will utilize advanced in-situ X-ray scattering techniques (USAXS/SAXS/WAXS) to probe multiscale structural changes in these materials. The successful candidate will join the ID02 team, a group of seven researchers dedicated to high-resolution, time-resolved studies of soft materials and biological specimens using state-of-the-art instrumentation.
This project is conducted in close collaboration with Laboratoire Rhéologie et Procédés (LRP) at Université Grenoble Alpes, and the candidate will be enrolled at Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) / IMEP 2 Doctoral School. The ID02 beamline features a 34-meter detector tube and cutting-edge detectors, enabling research on topics such as driven colloids, self-assembly in amphiphilic systems, and the relationship between microstructure and rheology in complex fluids.
Applicants should have a strong background in soft matter, process engineering, or fluid mechanics, and hold a degree suitable for PhD enrolment (MSc, Master 2 de Recherche, Laurea, or equivalent) in chemistry, materials science, physics, or a closely related field. Proof of diploma is required at the time of application. English proficiency at B2 level must be demonstrated unless the applicant is from a native-English-speaking country or holds a degree conducted in English. If proof is unavailable, a free English test will be provided.
Eligibility is subject to the Marie Sklodowska-Curie mobility rule: candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in France for more than twelve months in the three years preceding the application deadline (31 March 2026). Only doctoral candidates who are not already working towards or in possession of a doctoral degree are eligible. The contract is for two years, renewable for one additional year, and includes competitive compensation, allowances, and financial support for relocation to Grenoble.
ESRF is an international research institute with staff from 38 countries, offering a vibrant workplace in the heart of the Alps and Europe's Green Capital 2022. The facility is committed to diversity and equal opportunity, encouraging applications from disabled persons.
