The University of Stavanger is offering a PhD Fellowship in Industrial Economics, with a primary research focus on the seafood industry, including aquaculture and fisheries. The position is based at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Safety, Economics and Planning, which is internationally recognized for its research in risk management, societal safety, and industrial economics. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research group working on topics such as seafood production, processing, market dynamics, international trade, and the environmental and societal impacts of the seafood sector.

The PhD program in Risk Management and Societal Safety includes six months of relevant coursework, independent dissertation research, participation in national and international research environments, academic communication, a trial lecture, and public defense. The position is offered for three years (research only) or four years (research plus career-promoting work), with the specific arrangement clarified during recruitment. Career guidance and a personalized career plan are provided throughout the doctoral education.

Research topics are broadly defined, allowing the candidate to tailor their project to their interests, whether through applied econometric analysis, data-driven approaches, or theoretical economic modeling. Opportunities for international research stays (e.g., University of Florida, USA) and close collaboration with the Norwegian seafood sector are available. The fellow may also contribute to ongoing projects funded by the Norwegian Research Council, such as studies on salmon exports and sustainable aquaculture business models.

Applicants must submit a preliminary project proposal (max one page) outlining the problem, relevance, and methodological approach. This proposal will be further developed with supervisors during the first three months of employment. The position requires a five-year master’s degree in industrial economics, natural resource economics, environmental economics, or a related field, with strong quantitative and programming skills (R, Python, MATLAB, or similar). English proficiency is mandatory, with specific test score requirements for international applicants unless exempted. Basic knowledge of a Scandinavian language or willingness to learn is expected.
