The International Max Planck Research School for Immunobiology, Epigenetics, and Metabolism (IMPRS-EBM) at the University of Freiburg offers a highly interdisciplinary PhD programme in Biology. This collaborative programme provides outstanding students with research-oriented training in epigenetics, biophysics, metabolism, biochemistry, cell biology, proteomics, bioinformatics, and functional genomics. IMPRS-EBM is designed to train doctoral researchers to become self-reliant and to acquire the knowledge necessary for their research projects. Fellows benefit from access to state-of-the-art core facilities and intensive individualised mentoring by thesis advisory committees. Before starting their PhD project, students participate in laboratory rotations in three labs of their choice, ensuring a perfect match for their research interests. Soft skills courses in scientific writing, presentation, time and project management, and professional development are also offered.

Students have opportunities to interact with internationally renowned scientists and high-profile guest lecturers, attend local and international conferences, and build their scientific network. Generous travel grants are provided to all IMPRS-EBM fellows. The IMPRS Office supports international students with relocation and integration, including assistance in finding accommodation, practical advice on banking, cell phone plans, residence permits, and more. Guest rooms at the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics (MPI-IE) are available for new arrivals.

There are no teaching obligations, but students may teach and supervise graduate and undergraduate students for personal development. The university offers courses to enhance teaching skills, particularly in English. Most students are required to matriculate at the University of Freiburg, with a semester contribution of 190 EUR covering university services and discounted public transport. No tuition fees are charged.

PhD positions are funded for three years, with possible extension for one more year. Applicants must have a Master's degree (MSc) or 'Diplom' (or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, biomedicine, chemistry, physics, or a related field. The degree must be awarded by the programme start date. Fluency in English is required, but no formal language certificate is necessary. German is not required, and international students are offered opportunities to take German language courses.
