A PhD position is available at the University of Sheffield, focusing on the intersection of circular economy and fire safety engineering. The research will investigate the structural fire performance of underutilised local timber and reused timber, aiming to advance sustainable construction practices.

The project includes experimental work on engineered structural timber composites, fundamental characterisation of timber properties under fire conditions, and associated numerical modelling. Supervision will be provided by Martyn McLaggan, Lecturer in Low Carbon Design, and Giacomo Torelli, both affiliated with the School of Mechanical, Aerospace & Civil Engineering. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in civil or mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field, with an interest in fire safety, sustainability, and experimental research.
