Description

The Berlin School of Economics invites applications for its PhD program in Economics, Accounting, Finance, or Management, starting October 2026. This program is a collaborative effort among nine leading research institutions in the Berlin-Brandenburg area, including Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and others. The program is designed to foster the development of young researchers through a vibrant, networked academic community and offers both high-level academic and policy-oriented research opportunities. Students can choose from four distinct PhD tracks: Economics, Accounting, Finance, and Management. The curriculum is structured into a qualification phase (approximately three semesters) and a dissertation phase (three to four years). During the qualification phase, students undertake rigorous coursework in economic theory, applied economics, business studies, econometrics, and economic policy, earning at least 90 ECTS credits. Students have the flexibility to define their research area and select two supervisors, receiving early feedback on their research proposals through seminars and individual meetings. Funding is provided through stipends during the qualification phase, allowing students to focus on their studies and research. In the dissertation phase, students are typically employed at the research institution affiliated with their supervisor, gaining valuable professional experience. The PhD degree is awarded by the institution of one of the student’s supervisors. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in academia, policy institutions, and organizations, as evidenced by the program’s strong placement record. Eligibility requirements include a Master’s degree in economics or business studies, or a related field with sufficient background in economics or business. Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree may apply if they also apply for a fast-track Master’s program. Non-native English speakers must demonstrate proficiency in English, preferably with TOEFL or IELTS scores, unless they have studied at an English-speaking university. GRE General Test scores are highly recommended for all applicants. Applications must be submitted via the Berlin School of Economics Application Portal by January 15, 2026. For more information and to access the application portal, visit the official website. An information session about the program will be held on November 28, 2025, via video conference.
