About this position
The PhD in Medical Research – Cardiovascular Science at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich) is a structured, interdisciplinary doctoral programme designed for candidates passionate about advancing cardiovascular science. Hosted by the Munich Medical Research School (MMRS) and involving various LMU University Hospital departments, this programme offers comprehensive training in both basic and clinical aspects of cardiovascular research.
Doctoral candidates engage in a curriculum that spans cardiology, vascular and cardiac surgery, paediatric cardiac procedures, and the pathophysiology and control of the cardiovascular system. The research spectrum ranges from laboratory investigations to clinical trials, bridging natural science and medical studies. Students join international research groups and benefit from collaborations with partners in Germany and abroad, international guest lecturers, and thematic reference to global cardiovascular research.
The programme is full-time, lasting six semesters, and begins each winter semester (October). It is open to applicants from medicine, veterinary medicine, life sciences, pharmacy, health sciences, medical engineering, and related disciplines. The curriculum includes two intensive study blocks in Munich, daily lectures, workshops, seminars, and regular research progress meetings. Doctoral candidates work closely with a thesis advisory committee to tailor their research goals and curricular content, ensuring both subject-specific and interdisciplinary qualifications. Additional support is provided by the GraduateCenter, including help with accommodation, visa matters, and registration procedures.
Applicants must hold a qualifying degree (minimum 240 ECTS, typically 8 semesters) and demonstrate English proficiency (EU B2, IELTS 5–6.5, TOEFL 87+ or equivalent). A strong academic record, scientific motivation, a full research proposal with sufficient funding, and two academic referees are required. The application period runs annually from 1 December to 31 January, with all applications submitted via the MMRS online portal.
While the programme does not offer direct scholarships or stipends, LMU provides various funding opportunities such as travel and completion grants. Tuition fees are waived, but students pay a semester contribution (85 EUR) and cover living costs (1,000–1,200 EUR/month). The International Office assists with accommodation, and rooms in shared flats are available on the private market.
This PhD programme is ideal for highly motivated candidates seeking to contribute to cutting-edge cardiovascular research in an international, collaborative environment at one of Germany’s leading universities.
