PhD in Multispecies Futures, Digital Media & Climate Justice (Artistic Research) University of Twente in Netherlands

The University of Twente, in collaboration with the University of Groningen and the JUST ART network, is offering a fully funded PhD position titled "ReStor(y)ing Multispecies Futures Through Digital Media." This position is part of the larger JUST ART project, which aims to create common grounds for climate justice through artistic research, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The PhD will be hosted at KiTeS - Knowledge, Transformation, and Society, and affiliated with the RUrban Futures Collective.

The research focus is on investigating multispecies futures through digital media and artistic research, examining how digital practices can contribute to more just climate futures. The project will involve collaborations with artists, cultural partners, and academic institutions across the JUST ART network. Candidates will engage critically and creatively with environmental data, such as pollution data, biodiversity surveys, and citizen science data, and will develop multi-sensory ways of envisioning future scenarios that give voice to diverse species. Artistic experimentation with data and code, as well as participatory installations, are key components of the research.

The PhD is open to candidates from humanities, social sciences, arts, or related fields, with a preference for those with prior knowledge of climate justice frameworks and experience in digital media, artistic research, or interdisciplinary practices. Applicants should have or be about to obtain a Master’s degree in a relevant field, demonstrate excellent research skills, and be able to work both independently and collaboratively. Good command of English is required, and regular presence at the University of Twente is expected.

The position offers a full-time, 4-year contract with a gross monthly salary starting at €3,059 and increasing to €3,881, plus benefits such as holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, pension scheme, and parental leave.
