About this position
This funded PhD position at the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK CEN) offers an exciting opportunity to advance the science of nuclear fuel fabrication for next-generation reactors. The research focuses on the sintering kinetics and mechanisms in uranium dioxide (UO2) and high-plutonium mixed-oxide (MOX) nuclear fuels, specifically for Lead-cooled Fast Reactor Small Modular Reactors (LFR-SMRs). These reactors are at the forefront of nuclear innovation, promising scalable, safe, and low-carbon energy solutions. The European EAGLES-300 initiative aims to commercialize a 350 MWe LFR-SMR by 2039, driving the need for advanced fuel technologies.
High-plutonium MOX fuels present unique fabrication challenges, as conventional sintering methods are inadequate due to altered thermodynamic behavior. This project will investigate optimal sintering parameters, focusing on how time, heating rate, and gas atmosphere affect pellet quality. The research will characterize powder properties, study the influence of additives and manufacturing routes on microstructure, and analyze densification, grain growth, and sintering behavior using both batch and in-situ techniques.
Work will be conducted in SCK CEN’s state-of-the-art fuel laboratories, employing powder metallurgical methods and advanced solid-state characterization tools such as optical and electron microscopy, particle size and surface area analysis, density measurements, and X-ray diffraction. In-situ techniques like thermogravimetric analysis and dilatometry will be used, complemented by microstructural examination with electron probe microanalysis.
SCK CEN offers a unique international research environment, close cooperation with the academic sector, and access to innovative facilities designed for nuclear experiments. The SCK CEN Academy provides excellent internal training courses and multidisciplinary research opportunities, ensuring a supportive and stimulating environment for doctoral candidates.
Eligibility requires a Master of Science or Master of Science in Engineering, with a background in Material Science or Physico-chemistry, and excellent English proficiency. The position is fully funded for four years, with a start date of October 1, 2026. The application deadline is March 31, 2026. For further details and to apply, visit the SCK CEN website or contact [email protected].
