About this position
The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, offers a PhD position focused on in situ X-ray nanodiffraction analysis of hydrogen interaction with microstructures. ESRF is a world-leading international research centre, renowned for its advanced particle accelerator and intense X-ray beams, supporting thousands of scientists annually across diverse fields. The facility is supported by 19 countries and fosters a diverse, inclusive environment.
This PhD project is based at the ID13 beamline, which specializes in fast scanning X-ray micro-/nano-beam diffraction and X-ray fluorescence detection, often used for in-situ and operando experiments. The research aims to advance understanding of hydrogen interactions with materials, a crucial area for hydrogen-based technologies and global sustainability. The project will develop an electrochemical X-ray nanodiffraction technique, enabling simultaneous hydrogen charging and real-time characterization of structural, microstructural, and stress-strain changes in metallic microstructures. Key objectives include mapping hydrogen diffusion fronts, hydride formation, and analyzing the influence of interfaces and stress gradients.
Applicants should have a strong interest in materials science. A background in X-ray diffraction and/or electrochemistry is desirable but not mandatory. Experience with scientific programming (e.g., Python, Matlab) is beneficial. Candidates must hold a degree qualifying for PhD enrolment (such as MSc, Master 2 de Recherche, Laurea, or equivalent) in chemistry, materials science, physics, or a closely related science. Proof of diploma completion is required. English proficiency at B2 level must be demonstrated unless the applicant is from a native-English-speaking country or holds a degree conducted in English. If proof is unavailable, a free English test will be provided.
Applicants must comply with the Marie Sklodowska-Curie mobility rule: candidates may not have resided or carried out their main activity in France for more than twelve months in the three years immediately before the application deadline (31 March 2026). Candidates must not already possess a doctoral degree and must meet the requirements for enrolment in a doctoral programme at Montanuniversity Leoben, Austria.
The position offers a contract of two years, renewable for one year, and includes a competitive compensation and allowances package, with financial support for relocation to Grenoble. ESRF provides a vibrant international research environment, opportunities to collaborate with global experts, and a workplace designed to support quality of life. For further details on employment terms and conditions, visit the ESRF jobs page.
To apply, submit your application online via the provided link, including proof of diploma and English proficiency. Review eligibility for the mobility rule and ensure all requirements are met. Join ESRF for a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in materials science and hydrogen technologies.
