This fully funded PhD position at Grenoble INP - Institute of Engineering offers an exciting opportunity to join the cutting-edge research field of MXenes, a class of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and nitrides. MXenes are recognized for their exceptional physical and structural properties and are rapidly emerging as key materials for applications in energy storage, supercapacitors, gas sensors, and photovoltaics.
The doctoral project will focus on a systematic experimental and theoretical investigation of the tunability of 2D MXenes in the compositional row Ti2CTz – Ti2CxNyTz – Ti2NTz. The research aims to elucidate the role of carbon, nitrogen, and functional groups (Tz) on the electronic structure and properties of these materials. Key tasks include: (i) chemical synthesis of Ti2CTz, Ti2CxNyTz, and Ti2NTz MXenes; (ii) structural, morphological, and physico-chemical characterization of exfoliated materials; (iii) identification of stable carbonitride MXene configurations via first-principle simulation and theoretical prediction of their electronic structure; and (iv) study of the electrochemical and optoelectronic properties of the developed materials.
The position is based in Grenoble, France, at the LMGP laboratory, part of Grenoble INP. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities and interdisciplinary expertise. The project is funded through the Horizon Europe - MSCA program, providing financial support for the duration of the PhD.
Eligibility requires a Master degree or equivalent in Inorganic Chemistry, Materials Science, or related disciplines. Candidates should demonstrate motivation, initiative, organizational skills, and good communication abilities. Proficiency in English is essential. Experience in chemical synthesis, materials characterization, or theoretical simulation is advantageous.
