About this position
The University of Groningen is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on Youth Inclusion in Climate-Responsive Urban Planning, situated within the Faculty of Spatial Sciences and the TRACE (Transformations, Communities, and Environments) research programme. This interdisciplinary project aims to integrate youth participation and Generative AI (GenAI) into urban planning and climate-responsive design, with a special emphasis on marginalized youth. The research will develop and empirically test the innovative “Vibe-Designing” co-design methodology, which leverages AI tools to facilitate visually rich, interactive participation in urban decision-making processes.
Key research activities include conducting systematic literature reviews on AI in participatory planning, qualitative and ethnographic fieldwork in urban participation settings, engaging with policymakers, planners, AI developers, and youth stakeholders, and analyzing the cultural, institutional, and ethical aspects of AI-mediated co-design. The project employs a multi-method approach, including interviews, participant observation, focus groups, and visual-based methods. The successful candidate will also contribute to teaching (approximately 15% of their time) and disseminate research findings through academic publications, conferences, and policy outputs.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in urban planning, urban design, geography, urban studies, anthropology, science and technology studies, or a related field. Strong qualitative research skills, motivation for research, cultural sensitivity, and excellent English proficiency are essential. Experience with participatory or co-design processes, digital engagement tools, or critical AI ethics is advantageous. Programming or advanced technical AI skills are not required, but openness to working with GenAI tools is expected.
The position offers a gross monthly salary of €3,059 – €3,881, 232 vacation hours per year, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, and an 8% holiday allowance. The appointment is for four years, contingent on a positive assessment after the first year. The University of Groningen provides extensive opportunities for personal and professional development within a vibrant, interdisciplinary academic community. The Faculty of Spatial Sciences is committed to impactful research and teaching in planning, demography, and geography, with a strong focus on societal challenges such as climate change and inclusive urban development.
