About this position

The University of Amsterdam's Intelligent Data Engineering Lab (INDElab) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position as part of the UNIFIED project. This research opportunity focuses on developing adaptive architectures and foundation models for integrating healthcare data, with a special emphasis on incorporating patient preferences and addressing challenges such as data heterogeneity, quality, and robust integration.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment within the Informatics Institute, working under the supervision of Dr. Jan-Christoph Kalo and Prof. Paul Groth. The PhD project will involve conducting novel research at the intersection of data integration and foundation models, publishing results in leading journals and conferences, and collaborating with consortium members and stakeholders in the UNIFIED project. The candidate will also participate in group activities within INDElab and contribute to the supervision of bachelor and master students.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold an MSc in computer science, artificial intelligence, or a closely related field. Essential skills include strong programming abilities in Python or Rust, expertise in deep learning systems, analytical and problem-solving skills, and fluency in English. Experience with biomedical data, an affinity for technology applications, and open source contributions are advantageous but not required.

Funding and Benefits: The position offers a gross monthly salary between €3,059 and €3,881 (scale P) for a 38-hour work week, plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end allowance. The initial contract is for 18 months, with extension to a total of 4 years upon satisfactory evaluation. Additional benefits include 232 holiday hours per year, extra holidays between Christmas and New Year, comprehensive educational programs, partner and parental leave, pension contributions, Dutch language courses, and housing assistance for international hires. The 30% tax ruling may apply for non-Dutch applicants. The position is governed by the Collective Labour Agreement of Universities of the Netherlands.
