The Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) in Tübingen, Germany, is offering a PhD position in Computer Vision within the Optics & Sensing Laboratory (OSLab). This opportunity is part of the WeGaze project, which focuses on large-space gaze analysis using multi-camera systems for social interactions. The project aims to develop advanced datasets and algorithms to capture and analyze eye gaze, contributing to the creation of highly realistic human and animal avatars for applications in research, film, virtual reality, biology, and medicine.
Leveraging unique 3D and 4D capture facilities, machine learning, computer vision, and advanced graphics, the research team models human and animal shapes and behaviors. The Eye Movement Study is conducted in close collaboration with Assistant Professor Xucong Zhang from Delft University of Technology, who co-supervises the doctoral researcher alongside Dr. Senya Polikovsky at MPI-IS. The project is funded by the DFG SPP Programme Understanding Gaze (UGaze SPP 2481), and the successful candidate will be part of both the School of SPP Programme and the International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS-IS).
The doctoral researcher will develop and enhance capture systems, including hardware and study design, collect data using these systems, and create cutting-edge gaze estimation and blink detection algorithms in collaboration with TU Delft. The role also involves working with psychology researchers to adapt and improve systems for specific case studies. The candidate is expected to spend time on-site in Delft with Prof. Zhang.
Applicants should have an MSc degree and a strong academic background in computer vision and machine learning. Required skills include proficiency in Python, OpenCV, PyTorch, Unreal Engine, and C++. Good oral and written English communication skills, teamwork, and attention to detail are essential. An academic background or interest in psychology is advantageous.
