About this position
Linköping University, one of Sweden’s leading AI institutions, invites applications for a PhD position focused on advancing machine learning methods for spatio-temporal modelling, with a concrete application to urban gas transport and dispersion. The project aims to develop new generative modelling techniques, data assimilation strategies, and multi-scale neural network architectures to address challenges in assimilating heterogeneous sensor data, computational efficiency for real-time deployment, and uncertainty quantification. These innovations are motivated by practical needs in air quality monitoring, emergency response, and greenhouse gas flux estimation in urban environments.
The research will be conducted at the Division of Statistics and Machine Learning (STIMA) within the Department of Computer and Information Science, known for its modern integration of statistical and computational approaches. The project is a collaborative effort between STIMA (main supervisor: Prof Fredrik Lindsten) and the Centre for Environmental and Climate Science at Lund University (co-supervisor: Prof Natascha Kljun), supported by the ELLIIT initiative. The advertised position emphasizes machine learning method development, while a parallel PhD position at Lund University focuses on applied aspects. Regular meetings and research visits will foster close collaboration between the groups.
As a PhD student, you will devote most of your time to doctoral studies and research, with up to 20% of your time allocated to teaching or departmental duties. You are expected to actively contribute to the collaborative environment and teamwork. The position offers access to state-of-the-art computing infrastructure, including Berzelius, EuroHPC Arrhenius, and the European AI Factory (MIMER). Linköping University is recognized for its strong links to national research initiatives such as WASP and ELLIIT, and was recently awarded the European Capital of Innovation as the European Rising Innovative city.
Applicants must have a Master’s degree in machine learning, statistics, computer science, fluid mechanics, or a related area, or equivalent knowledge. Strong mathematical background, documented experience in implementing models and algorithms, collaborative skills, and proficiency in English are required. Applications must include a personal letter starting with 'Suitability for research topic:' listing relevant qualifications. The position is fully funded, with salary progression and employment benefits determined locally. The initial employment is for one year, renewable for up to four years full-time, with possible extension to five years based on teaching and departmental duties. Starting date is by agreement.
Apply online by April 24, 2026. Linköping University values diversity and equal opportunities. For more information about STIMA, visit https://liu.se/en/organisation/liu/ida/stima. Application link: Apply here.
