Description

This PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) offers the opportunity to join the vanderZant lab, a world-leading research group in Quantum Nanoscience, to investigate quantum charge transport phenomena in biological nanowires. The project addresses the global challenge of electronic waste by exploring non-toxic, biodegradable electronics, specifically focusing on the remarkable conductivity of cable bacteria, which can conduct electricity over centimeter distances at levels surpassing many man-made organic semiconductors. As a PhD student, you will fabricate electronic circuits using bio-nanowires, measure their electronic properties, and explore quantum transport phenomena, including phase coherence and quantum nuclear tunneling, particularly at low temperatures. The research involves device fabrication in the Kavli Nanolaboratory's state-of-the-art cleanroom, conducting sensitive electrical measurements under varying conditions, and interpreting and modeling the results to understand the underlying transport mechanisms. You will work in a collaborative, diverse, and supportive environment, regularly interacting with academic staff, PhD students, and postdocs, and collaborating with biologists in Belgium who supply the cable bacteria. The position includes comprehensive training and professional development through the TU Delft Graduate School. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Physics or Nanophysics, a strong interest in quantum transport and mesoscopic physics, and recommended experience in cleanroom fabrication and electrical measurements. Proficiency in Python for data acquisition and analysis, as well as strong English communication skills, are required. The position is fully funded with a 4-year employment contract, competitive salary, and benefits, including holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, and support for relocation. Requirements

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Physics or Nanophysics with a strong interest in quantum charge transport phenomena and mesoscopic physics. Affinity with biology is highly recommended. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python for data acquisition and analysis is required. A good command of English is necessary to work in an international environment.
