The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology - Hans Knöll Institute (Leibniz-HKI) in Germany is offering a fully funded PhD position as part of the International Leibniz Research School ILRS 2.0. The project, 'Investigation of RNA modification by natural products across species,' explores how fungal natural products can covalently modify RNA in different species, potentially revealing new mechanisms of pathogenesis and drug intervention. This interdisciplinary research sits at the interface of microbiology, RNA biology, and natural product chemistry, leveraging state-of-the-art technologies and a dynamic, international research community.

Supervised by Dr. Matthew Blango (Junior Research Group RNA Biology of Fungal Infections) and Prof. Christian Hertweck (Department of Biomolecular Chemistry), the successful candidate will join a structured PhD training program with course curricula, transferable skills, and international networking opportunities. The research aims to elucidate a new facet of fungal pathogenesis reliant on RNA modification and may identify novel druggable regulatory interfaces for future therapeutics. The position is hosted in Jena, Germany, a vibrant city known for its scientific community and cultural life.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or related disciplines. Candidates nearing completion of their degree are also welcome. A strong experimental background in molecular microbiology and/or nucleic acids biology is required, and experience with RNA modifications or natural products chemistry/chemical analytics is advantageous. Excellent communication skills in English and the ability to work in an international, interdisciplinary team are essential.

The position is fully funded for four years, with salary according to German TV-L.
