About this position
The University of Lausanne invites applications for a fully funded PhD position within the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network, SUPER (Sustainable Sports and Physical Activity for Equity and Resilience). This unique opportunity is designed for candidates interested in the intersection of climate change, sustainability, and sports science. The successful applicant will join a vibrant international network and be registered as a fee-free PhD student at the Université de Lausanne, with opportunities for secondments in industry and other European academic institutions.
The research project, titled "Climate change and sustainability strategies of major sports federations: Existing policies, drivers, and potential improvement strategies," aims to map and analyze the climate change strategies of major sport federations, investigate the driving factors behind their climate policies, and support one federation in developing or improving its sustainability strategy. The project will also study the physiological and perceived impact of climate change exposure on physical activity and health.
As a PhD Fellow, you will be expected to publish scientific articles, present findings at national and international conferences, contribute to the broader SUPER project, and participate in educational activities within the consortium. The position offers a full-time appointment for three years, with a competitive salary in line with MSCA regulations, including living, mobility, and family allowances where applicable. Tuition fees are waived, and the salary is paid in Swiss Francs, subject to standard deductions.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in political science, sport science, social sciences, administrative science, environmental sciences, or a related field. Strong interest in research on climate change and sport organizations, high motivation, excellent qualitative methods skills, and proficiency in English are essential. MSCA eligibility rules apply, including mobility requirements and the condition that applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree.
The selection process is open, transparent, and merit-based, involving eligibility checks, application screening, and online interviews with a diverse selection committee. For more information, prospective applicants can contact Prof Peter Gelius. Applications will open soon, and interested candidates are encouraged to attend one of the information sessions on March 23, 2026.
