The Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Institute of Aerospace Engineering, Chair of Space Systems, invites applications for a full-time PhD position as Research Associate within the MSCA Doctoral Network SLICE, starting October 1, 2026. This position is funded for 36 months and focuses on the numerical analysis of rocket engine emissions and their impact on the atmosphere and climate.
The research project aims to investigate the propagation of rocket engine plumes along the flight path and their temporal and spatial distribution in atmospheric layers. Key objectives include defining suitable interface regions, conducting numerical analysis of plume propagation near the nozzle outlet, performing multiscale simulations of exhaust plume expansion in various atmospheric layers, and developing interfaces for climate model data processing. The expected outcomes are a robust numerical model for exhaust gas dispersion, assessment of emission impacts on different atmospheric layers, and derivation of parameters for regional atmospheric effect calculations.
As part of the SLICE consortium, the successful candidate will benefit from secondments at leading European research centers: CERFACS (Toulouse, France) for interface definitions and numerical model adaptations, and IPSL (Guyancourt, France) for plume-in-grid model simulations. The position offers a competitive salary according to MSCA regulations, including living, mobility, and family allowances, as well as funding for technical and personal skills training, participation in international conferences, and outreach activities. Employer contributions to social security and health insurance are provided in accordance with German regulations.
Applicants must hold an MSc or equivalent in aerospace engineering, physics, or a related field, with solid knowledge in physical and analytical chemistry, computer science (numerical analysis, simulation, optimization, CFD), product and process engineering, condensed matter physics, and applied physics. Additional skills in EcoDesign, climate sciences, life-cycle assessment, and project management are desirable. Candidates should demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, proactive attitude, excellent English communication skills, and readiness to travel for secondments and events. Eligibility to enroll in a PhD program at TU Dresden is required, and applicants must comply with the Horizon Europe MSCA Mobility Rule and not have been awarded a doctoral degree at the date of recruitment.

Strong problem-solving skills, proactive attitude, and excellent communication skills in English (written and verbal) are essential.
