About this position

The Laboratory of Energy Science and Engineering (LESE) at ETH Zürich is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on structure-activity relationships for CO2 capture materials. This research opportunity is part of the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Separations and aims to advance the fundamental understanding of materials that enable the capture and conversion of CO2. The project integrates process modelling, computational materials screening and discovery, experimental synthesis, and mechanistic and performance assessment under application-relevant conditions for separation technologies.

The PhD project will combine the synthesis of model materials, operando characterization, and molecular modelling to identify new CO2 sorbent families and establish structure–performance relationships. Experimental techniques will include operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray total scattering, and vibrational spectroscopies. The candidate will work in a top-level research environment with advanced laboratory infrastructure and will have opportunities to learn cutting-edge techniques and develop their research abilities within a diverse and interdisciplinary team.

Applicants should hold an excellent MSc degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemistry, with experience in material synthesis and/or structural material characterization highly valued. The position is available from May 2026 onwards. ETH Zürich values diversity and sustainability, promoting an inclusive culture and equal opportunities for all staff and students. The university is renowned for its excellent education, fundamental research, and direct transfer of new knowledge into society, providing a stimulating environment for over 30,000 people from more than 120 countries.

To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter, and transcripts via the ETH Zürich online application portal. Applications sent by email or postal services will not be considered. For further information or questions, contact Dr. Paula Abdala ([email protected]) or Prof. Christoph Müller ([email protected]). For more details about LESE, visit the laboratory's website. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to climate-neutral solutions and advance your career in materials science and engineering at one of the world’s leading universities.
