About this position

The Technical University of Munich (TUM), Campus Straubing for Biotechnology and Sustainability, is offering two fully funded PhD positions in the field of biopolymer materials. The positions are part of the newly established Particle and Fiber Technology group, led by Professor Wenwen Fang. The research group focuses on extracting and isolating bio-based polymers such as cellulose and proteins from renewable feedstocks and waste streams, aiming to develop sustainable processes for converting these materials into high-performance fibers and functional materials.

Research Areas: The PhD projects center on the development and optimization of biopolymer-based fiber spinning processes, including dry-jet wet spinning and core-shell fiber spinning, as well as fundamental research in polymer and cellulose science. The work involves establishing and refining experimental protocols, troubleshooting lab infrastructure, and conducting innovative research on sustainable and functional fibers. There is flexibility for the successful candidates to contribute their own ideas within the scope of bio-based fiber materials.

Key Responsibilities: Responsibilities include lab development, teaching support (preparing and delivering course exercises and laboratory sessions), student supervision, and research on sustainable high-performance fibers. Candidates will also assist in the setup and management of laboratory infrastructure and may supervise Bachelor/Master students.

Eligibility: Applicants must have a Master’s degree in polymer science, chemistry, materials science or engineering, or a closely related field. Experience with cellulose, biopolymer processing, or fiber spinning is advantageous. Strong communication skills in English are required, and practical, hands-on skills are highly valued. Basic knowledge in mechanical engineering or experience with fiber spinning equipment is an advantage.

Funding and Benefits: The positions are fully funded (65% TV-L E13 pay scale, approximately 3000 € gross/month) for three years, with the possibility of extension. TUM offers a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment with opportunities for research freedom, career development, and teaching experience. The campus is located in Straubing, a leading center for renewable materials and sustainability technologies in Germany.

Application Process: To apply, candidates should submit a single PDF in English including a CV with publications, a one-page motivation letter, degree certificates, academic transcripts, and contact details of two referees to [email protected]. The application deadline is March 1, 2026. For more information, visit the Particle and Fiber Technology group website.
