The Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is inviting applications for PhD positions in the Business Statistics Group. This program offers rigorous foundational training in mathematical statistics and its applications to finance, economics, and data science. Students will have the opportunity to work closely with internationally recognized faculty, engaging in cutting-edge research in areas such as financial econometrics, high-dimensional statistics, machine learning, nonparametric statistics, portfolio theory, and stochastic processes.
The PhD program consists of a two-year MPhil phase focused on coursework and research skill development, followed by a three-year PhD phase dedicated to academic research and dissertation writing. The program is designed for students with a strong background in mathematics, probability theory, and statistics. While prior experience in finance and economics is not mandatory, an interest in applying statistical models to these fields is highly valued.
HKUST offers a vibrant research community and a beautiful campus located by the sea in Hong Kong, providing an inspiring environment for academic growth. All MPhil and PhD students receive a tax-exempt stipend of HK$19,135 per month (approximately £2,014.82). Outstanding candidates are encouraged to apply for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), which increases the monthly stipend to HK$28,400 and provides additional benefits.
