Description

The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is offering 13 PhD positions within the new Research Training Group CorMic, focused on correlative materials microscopy. This interdisciplinary program unites advanced microscopy, materials development, and data-driven science to address global challenges in climate, energy, and sustainability. CorMic pioneers innovative strategies combining cutting-edge microscopy, advanced materials design, and AI/ML approaches to accelerate discovery and optimization across scales. Doctoral researchers will work at the interface of physics, chemistry, materials science, and data science, developing multimodal and scale-bridging microscopy methods. Research topics include nanostructured functional films, hierarchical materials, and the integration of experimental and digital workflows for materials design and device optimization. The program is hosted at the Center for Nanoanalysis and Electron Microscopy (CENEM) and provides a dynamic, international research environment. CorMic offers a comprehensive qualification framework covering scientific, technical, and transferable skills, with opportunities for mentoring, research exchanges, and networking with leading partners. Graduates will be prepared for leadership roles in academia or industry, driving innovation in sustainable materials technologies. Applicants should have a strong academic background in physics, chemistry, materials science, computational engineering, or related fields. Proficient English communication skills are required; German is welcome but not mandatory. The PhD positions are funded for up to four years, with salaries according to the German civil service wage agreement. Female candidates and those with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Applications must include a motivation letter, CV (max. 2 pages), academic transcripts and certificates, and optionally, letters of recommendation and explanations of study delays or extracurricular activities. Candidates should mention up to three preferred projects. The application deadline is 7 January 2026, and the program starts in April 2026. Applications should be submitted electronically via FAU Jobs and addressed to Prof. Erdmann Spiecker. For more details, visit the official call and project descriptions. This is an excellent opportunity for highly qualified candidates interested in interdisciplinary research at the forefront of materials science, microscopy, and data-driven innovation.

Funding

PhD positions are funded for up to four years and paid according to the collective wage agreement of the German civil service. No specific stipend amount is mentioned. The program offers comprehensive training, mentoring, and research exchanges.
