About this position

The Environmental Economics Group at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is seeking two doctoral students for a four-year PhD programme in environmental and natural resource economics. SLU is a world-class institution in life and environmental sciences, with a strong commitment to excellence in research and education. The Department of Economics at SLU conducts research and teaching in economics and business studies, with priority areas including environment and natural resources, and agricultural economics.

Successful candidates will undertake advanced doctoral courses in economics (equivalent to at least 90 higher education credits over three semesters) and conduct research under the supervision of senior group members. Supervisors include Professor Rob Hart (macroeconomic development and sustainability), Associate Professor Shon Ferguson (applied micro-econometric methods in environmental economics), and Associate Professor Vivian Wei Huang (production economics, efficiency and productivity analysis). Students will develop their own research ideas within the group’s focus and expertise, culminating in a doctoral thesis.

Doctoral students are expected to operate independently and contribute to departmental activities, including teaching and administration (up to 20% of working hours, with study period extension if applicable). The position is based in Uppsala, with a start date in August 2026. Employment is full-time, and doctoral student salaries are set according to the local collective agreement with fixed salary progression.

Applicants must have a second-cycle (Master’s) qualification or equivalent, with at least 240 credits (including 60 at second-cycle level). Specific eligibility requires at least 90 higher education credits in economics, including an independent project and 30 credits at advanced level. Good knowledge of English (written and spoken) is required, equivalent to Swedish upper-secondary qualification Engelska B/6. Candidates should demonstrate strong academic performance, research potential, and a keen interest in environmental economics. Teamwork and contribution to group development are valued.

To apply, submit your application online by 7 April 2026. Required documents include a cover letter, CV, degree certificates, transcript of records, Master’s degree project (minimum 15 credits), proof of English proficiency, and contact details for two references. Foreign applicants must present a certified copy of their passport at the interview. Selection is based on eligibility and likelihood of successful completion within the allocated period.

SLU offers an inclusive and gender-equal work environment, welcoming applicants from diverse backgrounds. The university operates across multiple campuses and research sites throughout Sweden, contributing to sustainable societal development and good living conditions globally.
