About this position

The Multiphase & Multiscale (M&M) Flow Lab at the University of Maryland, College Park, led by Associate Professor Alban Sauret, is recruiting multiple PhD students. The lab is part of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and focuses on experimental research at the intersection of fluid mechanics, soft matter, and granular physics. Research topics include multiphase flows, suspension flows in manufacturing systems, granular and powder flows, clogging and particle transport in porous media, phase change and freezing, and modeling of natural hazards. Applications span environmental processes, industrial systems, and water-efficient agriculture.

Current projects address additive manufacturing challenges, transport and clogging of particles in complex environments, heat transfer and phase change phenomena, cohesive granular and particle transport, and transitions between dry and wet granular materials. The group also works on advancing drip irrigation technology to improve agricultural water efficiency. The lab employs experimental approaches, including millifluidic experiments and particle image velocimetry, to study hydrodynamic behavior and develop innovative solutions for industrial and environmental applications.
