PhD Positions in Political Science, Area Studies, and Social Sciences – CLOSER Project Institute of International Relations Prague in Czech Republic

The Institute of International Relations Prague (IIR) is offering three PhD student positions within the CLOSER project, funded by a Synergy Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). The project focuses on the interplay between political party systems and social cleavages in the post-Ottoman Middle East and North Africa (MENA), covering countries such as Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Palestine, Turkey, and Tunisia from 1908 to the present. The research brings together political scientists, geographers, historians, and public law experts to challenge Western-centric theories and explore the unique political and social dynamics of the MENA region.

Successful candidates will join the ERC CLOSER team at IIR and enroll in the Area Studies PhD program at the Institute of International Studies (IMS), Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University. The program includes interdisciplinary training, field research in a relevant MENA country, and participation in workshops and seminars. The research themes include social mobilisations and politics, political and constitutional liberalism, and linguistic minorities and politics, with a focus on contemporary phenomena and their historical and spatial dimensions.

Applicants must have a completed master's degree in a relevant field (political science, international relations, area studies, political sociology, public law, or related) before September 1, 2026. Fluency in English and the ability to conduct fieldwork and read documents in at least one relevant language (Arabic, Turkish, Hebrew, possibly Kurdish or Nubian) are required. The position is fully on-site in Prague, and candidates must be able to work in a team environment.

The funding package includes a gross salary of 55,000 Czech crowns per month for 36 months, with the possibility of a 12-month stipend from Charles University (25,000 Czech crowns/month) for those who opt for 'full student' status. Additional benefits include funds for field research, motivational bonuses, six weeks of vacation per year, and a supportive, international research environment.
