The Doctorate in Robotics and Intelligent Machines (DRIM) is a leading PhD program in Italy, coordinated by the University of Genoa and supported by the Italian Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Machines (I-RIM). This program offers a unique opportunity to conduct research in robotics, artificial intelligence, and intelligent machines, connecting top Italian universities, research centers, and industrial partners. The DRIM program features multiple research curricula, including Agrifood, Autonomous Systems, Healthcare and Wellness, Hostile and Unstructured Environments, Inspection and Maintenance of Infrastructures, and Mobility and Autonomous Vehicles.

PhD candidates can choose from a variety of research topics, such as harnessing robotics and AI for crop monitoring, safe generative models for control, geometric optimal control for physical systems, and security of networked dynamical systems. Host institutions include the National Research Council (CNR), the Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence for Industry (AI4I), and the University of Cagliari, among others. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary research, collaboration with leading companies, and access to state-of-the-art labs and international research networks.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree and submit a CV, research project description, degree transcript, and any additional qualifications or publications. At least one reference letter is required. The selection process includes evaluation of academic qualifications, motivation, reference letters, and an interview for shortlisted candidates. The PhD program lasts a minimum of 36 months and a maximum of 54 months.

Funding varies by research theme, with all PhD students receiving €3,300 per year for travel and research activities. Additional grants and scholarships may be available depending on the host institution and research topic. The application process is managed through the University of Genoa's online portal, where candidates can select up to two curricula and prioritize up to three research topics.
