The International PhD Programme for Agricultural Economics, Bioeconomy and Sustainable Food Systems (Dr agr) at Justus Liebig University Giessen, in cooperation with University of Hohenheim, is designed for candidates from developing countries seeking to advance their research and analytical skills in agricultural development, environmental economics, and rural development. Applicants must hold an outstanding MSc or MA in agricultural economics, economics, environmental sciences, or rural development, obtained within the last six years. At least two years of relevant work experience as a scientist at a higher education or research institute is required, with preference for candidates whose employers offer a reintegration guarantee. Language requirements include passing a German language course exam and demonstrating excellent English proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS scores, or proof of English as the language of instruction in a previous MSc programme from a recognised institution).

There are no tuition fees, but students must pay a semester contribution (402 EUR for winter semester 2025/26) and cover living costs (approximately 900 EUR/month). No funding opportunities are available within the university. Accommodation options include university halls of residence or private housing.
