The PhD Programme in Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and Resources (Resource Nexus) at Dresden University of Technology, in cooperation with the United Nations University – Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and Resources (UNU-FLORES), offers a unique opportunity for doctoral candidates to engage in interdisciplinary research addressing global challenges in resource management. The programme is science-based and requires foundational knowledge in physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, and social sciences at the undergraduate level. All courses are taught in English, with elective modules available in German for German-speaking students.

Spanning seven semesters and comprising 210 ECTS credits, the curriculum includes both mandatory and elective courses, thematic and methodological modules, and opportunities for skill development through the Graduate Academy of TU Dresden. The first semester focuses on the basic concepts of the Resource Nexus, governance, and capacity development, while subsequent semesters allow students to tailor their coursework and research to their interests in agreement with supervisors. From the third semester onwards, candidates concentrate fully on their dissertation research.

PhD students benefit from international elements such as projects with partners in Germany and abroad, thematic reference to global contexts, and integrated internships that often involve fieldwork and stays abroad. The programme is promoted and funded by DAAD (EPOS/GSSP), and students are responsible for a semester contribution of approximately 300 EUR, which covers public transport and discounts. Living costs in Dresden are moderate, estimated at 850 EUR per month, with recommended funding between 1,200 and 1,600 EUR per month to cover all expenses.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree in engineering, natural sciences, social sciences, or a closely related field, and a research-based Master's degree related to environmental resources management. A minimum final grade of 2.5 (German grading system) in the Master's is required. Experience with the Resource Nexus is considered an asset. English proficiency must be demonstrated via IELTS (7.0) or TOEFL (600 paper-based/100 internet-based), unless previous degrees were taught in English.
