PhD Student Position in Virus Genomics and Chromatin Control Mechanisms Leibniz Institute of Virology in Germany

The Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV) is a leading independent research institution specializing in basic biomedical research, and is a member of the prestigious Leibniz Association. The Virus Genomics Department, led by Professor Adam Grundhoff, focuses on the study of chronically infecting DNA viruses, particularly investigating chromatin control mechanisms during viral latency and virus-induced tumorigenesis. The department is part of the DFG Research Unit DEEP-DV (FOR5200), and employs advanced experimental infection systems, high-throughput sequencing, and single-molecule live-cell imaging to explore how DNA viruses interact with host chromatin pathways.

This PhD student position offers the opportunity to conduct a research project centered on chromatin control in 2D and 3D cell culture models, including human organoids infected with human polyomaviruses such as BK-Polyomavirus (BKV) and Merkel Cell Polyomavirus (MCPyV). The project aims to identify critical mechanisms of viral persistence and replication, and to optimize antiviral strategies to interrupt these processes. The successful candidate will present research findings at national and international conferences, contributing to the scientific community and advancing knowledge in virus genomics.

The ideal applicant will possess a Master's degree in the life sciences (M.Sc.) or an equivalent qualification, demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills (including proficiency in English), and show scientific curiosity, team spirit, and eagerness to make fundamental discoveries. Previous experience in virology, molecular biology, or cell biology is advantageous but not mandatory.
