About this position

[Funding is sought from the University of Nottingham as part of a competitive process. This will cover home tuition fees and UKRI stipend.]

Join the University of Nottingham’s Centre for Additive Manufacturing (CfAM) for a PhD studentship focused on developing advanced 3D printed microfluidic flow reactors for cost-efficient and sustainable synthesis of medicines. This project addresses critical challenges in medicine manufacturing, including inefficiencies, environmental concerns, and supply chain complexities, by leveraging cutting-edge 3D printing technologies to enable on-demand production. The research synergistically combines flow synthesis, biocatalysis, and additive manufacturing, aiming to design and fabricate high-efficiency reactor geometries using high-resolution bioactive materials. You will also explore downstream components such as novel chemical separators and co-factor recycling units, and test commercial enzymes for medicine intermediate synthesis in collaboration with industrial partners like Johnson Matthey.

As a PhD student, you will have access to state-of-the-art additive manufacturing systems, including an ultra-high-resolution projection micro-stereolithography (PµSL) system and a unique multi-material inkjet platform. The CfAM provides a vibrant environment with extensive support, mentorship, and training, preparing you for a successful career in academia or industry. The project is aligned with priority research streams within the Faculty of Engineering, ensuring guidance from senior researchers and integration into a thriving interdisciplinary community.

Eligibility requires a 1st or 2:1 degree in engineering, physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline. Desirable skills include interest in 3D printing, programming (e.g. Matlab), analytical chemistry, and biochemistry/protein expression. The studentship is open to UK/home and international candidates. Funding is sought from the University of Nottingham through a competitive process, covering home tuition fees and a UKRI stipend. The PhD will start in October 2026 and last for 42 months.

To apply, submit a covering letter, CV, and academic transcripts to Simon Attwood at [email protected], referencing the project title. Applications without academic transcripts will not be considered. The deadline is 9 March 2026, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
