The University of Hertfordshire invites applications for a fully funded PhD studentship in Light Scattering by Single Particles Relevant for Atmospheric Research, based at the Hatfield, College Lane campus. This three-year, full-time position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the field of Atmospheric and Climate Physics (ACP) through both experimental and theoretical research. The project focuses on understanding light scattering by single particles, which is crucial for climate research and atmospheric science.
Experimental work will involve the development and application of laser diffractometry for light scattering measurements on single levitated particles, as well as polarimetry and particle characterisation using optical and scanning microscopy. Theoretical aspects will address unresolved questions about light scattering by atmospheric particles, such as the effects of particle complexity and surface roughness, using computational methods including physical optics and the discrete dipole approximation. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with ACP colleagues and have opportunities to present their research at international conferences.
The principal supervisor is Dr Evelyn Hesse, with Professor Detlef Mueller as part of the supervisory team. Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s degree (2.1 or above) in Physics or a related subject, or a Master’s degree if their BSc classification is 2.2. Relevant laboratory experience (e.g., laser and optical instrumentation) and/or computational modelling skills (Python, C++) are desirable. The studentship is open to UK, EU, and international applicants. Candidates whose first language is not English must provide evidence of English language proficiency (minimum IELTS 6.5 or equivalent).
Funding includes a full tuition fee waiver for three years and a stipend at UK Research Council rates (£20,780 for 2025-2026). Applicants requiring a student visa must cover visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs themselves. The start date is 1 October 2026, and the application deadline is 6 April 2026 at 9am.
