About this position

This exciting opportunity at Ghent University offers both PhD studentship and post-doctoral positions focused on hp-adaptive multiphysics simulations of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). NEMS are nano-scale devices that integrate miniaturized electrical and mechanical components such as actuators, beams, sensors, pumps, resonators, and motors. Their low power consumption, rapid response, and minimal mass enable extremely sensitive measurements, making them highly valuable for a wide range of engineering and industrial applications.

The project aims to advance the design and analysis of NEMS by developing a robust, accurate, and computationally efficient numerical tool capable of simulating essential atomic-level phenomena, including damage and fracture. This requires a multiscale, multiphysics approach that combines physical modeling at different scales with the implementation of novel numerical methods. The research will address the thermo-electro-mechanical behavior of NEMS and their interactions with external forces, providing insights critical for the reliable operation of these advanced devices.

The successful candidates will join the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at Ghent University, working under the supervision of Professor Magd Abdelwahab. The research areas include mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, solid mechanics, nanotechnology, and structural engineering. The positions are full-time for three years, offering a stimulating environment for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of mechanics, materials science, and computational modeling.
