PhD Studentship: Unilateralism vs Multilateralism in International Economic Policy for Sustainable Transitions University of Essex in United Kingdom

This fully funded PhD studentship at the University of Essex offers an exciting opportunity to explore the intersection of international economic policy and sustainable transitions. Hosted within the ‘Sustainable Transitions – Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme’, the project investigates the costs and benefits of unilateralism versus multilateralism in the pursuit of sustainability, with a particular focus on the European Union’s use of economic instruments such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. These policies aim to leverage the EU’s economic power to influence global trading partners and drive climate and sustainability initiatives, but they also face resistance from governments, businesses, and international organizations. The research will critically assess the legality, legitimacy, and effectiveness of such unilateral approaches, considering the roles and responses of various stakeholders.

Methodologically, the project is interdisciplinary, combining legal analysis with multi-stakeholder approaches and theoretical frameworks to evaluate the impact of unilateral economic regulation on sustainability outcomes. The successful candidate will benefit from comprehensive training in interdisciplinary research methods, including exposure to a secondary discipline relevant to the project. The programme provides ongoing support, access to the Proficio scheme (£2,500 for training courses), and an additional £10,000 for research costs and further training. Scholars are encouraged to audit relevant masters and degree-level courses to broaden their expertise.

All doctoral scholars will join the University of Essex’s ‘Centre for Environment and Society’, gaining access to a vibrant academic community, regular events, and networking opportunities. The position is ideal for candidates with a background in law or international relations, though prior experience in stakeholder analysis is not required as training will be provided.
