Postdoc in Brain Barriers and Neurodegeneration at Amsterdam UMC Amsterdam UMC in Netherlands

Amsterdam UMC is recruiting a postdoc for a project on brain barriers in neurodegenerative diseases, with a special focus on the meninges and their role in multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease. The work sits within the Neuro-immunology research group at Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc, and is part of Amsterdam Neuroscience.

The project explores how CNS barriers such as the blood-brain barrier, choroid plexus, and meninges contribute to brain homeostasis, immune regulation, and disease mechanisms. The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team and contribute to research using human postmortem tissue, advanced imaging, spatial proteomics, transcriptomics, and analysis of large datasets. The role also involves studying interactions between immune cells and brain barriers and helping develop new therapeutic strategies.

Applicants should have a completed PhD in neuroscience or cell biology, with knowledge of brain pathology. Experience with microscopy, image analysis, and bioinformatics is required, along with familiarity with large datasets from single-cell sequencing, imaging, or spatial technologies. Strong English communication skills, flexibility, initiative, teamwork, and the ability to work independently are also expected. Working with autopsy tissue and understanding brain heterogeneity are important parts of the role.

This is a fixed-term position for 12 months, with the intention to extend to 2 years. The salary is scale 10, ranging from €3,598 to €5,669 gross per month for full-time employment, plus an 8.3% end-of-year bonus. Additional benefits include pension accrual, travel reimbursement, and a bike scheme. Hepatitis B vaccination is mandatory and will be provided by Amsterdam UMC.
