About this position

This postdoctoral position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on developing measurement-driven compact models for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). As integration density in photonics increases, new design methods and testing strategies are required to keep pace with technological advancements. The successful candidate will be responsible for setting up and validating compact models for optical amplifiers, lasers, and photodetectors, with particular attention to noise and high-power behavior.

These models are essential for simulating advanced, high-density PICs and will enable applications beyond traditional communications, such as fiber sensing, metrology, and microwave photonics. The role involves establishing and evaluating novel optical test and characterization techniques, aiming for robust wafer-scale parameter measurement. Initial work will be conducted in the optical characterization lab, with subsequent transfer of techniques to automated wafer testing tools. The scientific challenge lies in pioneering new standards and design concepts in a rapidly evolving field, offering significant opportunities for creative researchers.

The postdoc will collaborate closely with the Photonic Integration Technology Center, foundry, design and test partners in the Pix Europe consortium, and the JePPIX network. Eindhoven’s location in the Brainport ecosystem facilitates further collaboration with academic and industrial partners. The position is embedded within the Casimir Institute at TU/e, which brings together research groups in integrated photonics, semiconductor technology, and quantum technology. The Photonic Integration group (PhI) at Electrical Engineering, comprising around 70 members including 25 PhD students, provides extensive, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities.

The appointment is for two years, with a competitive salary (scale 10), year-end bonus, vacation pay, and allowances for commuting, remote work, and internet costs. International candidates benefit from a tax compensation scheme and moving expense support. Applicants must have a PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, strong affinity with photonic devices and circuits, and experience in optics, photonics, or semiconductor devices. Modeling and experimental skills are required, along with fluency in English (C1 level).

Applications must be submitted online and include a cover letter, CV with publications and references, and a list of five best publications. The vacancy remains open until filled, with a formal deadline of November 16, 2025.
