Description

The Department of Sustainable and Bio-inspired Materials at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (MPICI), led by Prof. Dr. Silvia Vignolini, invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to join an ambitious project focused on the hydration-governed colloidal stability of sustainable nanocellulose. This research aims to bridge sustainable processing with fundamental colloid science, enhancing the sustainability of bio-based material building blocks. The project is part of the Max Planck Society’s Sustainability Network “SusMax,” which advances renewable materials through fundamental insights into colloidal science, precision interfacial engineering, and mechanistic understanding. The successful candidate will work in the group of Dr. Wenyang Xu, collaborating closely with the Max Planck Institute of Polymer Research. The position offers a stimulating, interdisciplinary environment within the vibrant scientific community of MPICI, access to state-of-the-art infrastructure for surface and material characterization, and remuneration according to TVöD-Bund up to pay group E13. Key research responsibilities include investigating the colloidal stability of cellulose nanoparticles, developing and evaluating physicochemical surface modifications, designing and applying advanced surface/interfacial measurement strategies, and elucidating the cellulose-water interfacial structure and dynamics. The role requires a PhD in chemistry or materials science, with a strong background in soft matter, surface and interface science, or physical chemistry. Experience with colloids, surface/interfacial characterization, and techniques such as SAXS/WAXS, neutron methods, XPS, AFM, QCM-D, or ITC is highly desirable. Strong data analysis, scientific writing skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are essential. Research experience with nanocellulose is advantageous but not required. Good English language skills are necessary. The position is full-time, initially for 12 months with the possibility of extension, and is available from January 1, 2026. Requirements

Applicants must hold a PhD in chemistry or materials science with a research background in soft matter, surface and interface science, materials characterization, or physical chemistry. Proven experience with colloids/soft matter and surface/interfacial characterization is highly desirable. Hands-on skills in techniques such as SAXS/WAXS, neutron methods, spectroscopic or optical methodologies, XPS, AFM (including force mapping), QCM-D, or ITC are preferred. Strong data analysis and scientific writing skills, ability to work independently and in teams, and a strong interest in interdisciplinary research are required. Research experience with nanocellulose is advantageous but not mandatory. Good English language skills in speech and writing are necessary.
