Leiden University College The Hague is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the transdisciplinary project on Peace and Conservation of Ecology at Disputed Seas (PaCE). This project explores the interdependencies between biodiversity, socioeconomic development, and human well-being, with a focus on highly disputed marine areas such as the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea. The successful candidate will examine how these regions contribute to socioeconomic development and human well-being, disaggregate ecosystem service flows and equity for countries with claims in the area, and assess the historical and current livelihood impacts of geopolitical conflict.

The postdoc will be responsible for developing field research protocols, conducting fieldwork (including surveys, interviews, and focus groups) in case study areas such as the Philippines and Vietnam, and contributing to multi-sectoral stakeholder workshops aimed at fostering science diplomacy for biodiversity conservation. The position is embedded in an interdisciplinary consortium with partners in Germany and Taiwan, and requires collaboration with scholars from diverse backgrounds.

Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., sustainability science, development studies, environmental science, human geography, marine social science) and expertise in ecosystem services, livelihood analysis, gender analysis, equity, marine social analysis, resilience, or social-ecological systems. Strong quantitative research skills, willingness to develop qualitative research skills, excellent English communication, and experience in fieldwork are essential. The ability to work in intercultural and interdisciplinary settings is required; experience with mixed methods and fluency in Tagalog/Filipino/Vietnamese are desirable.

This is a fully funded, 24-month position (with possible extension), offering a gross monthly salary of €3,546–€5,538, comprehensive benefits, flexible and hybrid working options, and a supportive, inclusive work environment.
