Postdoctoral Researcher in Modern Arabic Inscriptions (AlUla Inscriptions Corpus Analysis Project) Ghent University in Belgium

Ghent University invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to join the AlUla Inscriptions Corpus Analysis Project (AICAP), a four-year collaboration with the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) in Saudi Arabia. The project aims to develop a comprehensive, accessible database of inscriptions from AlUla County, ranging from the 6th century BC to modern Arabic graffiti. The successful candidate will focus on early modern and modern Arabic inscriptions, particularly from the Ottoman period to the present, contributing to the digitization, transcription, annotation, and translation of these texts.

The postdoc will spend at least 70% of their time on academic research, mentor MA students working on the corpus, and design and teach courses on Arabic epigraphy and fieldwork methods. Responsibilities also include publishing research findings in project reports, peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at conferences. The position offers the opportunity to work in an international team, conduct regular fieldwork in Saudi Arabia, and contribute to public outreach and capacity building in AlUla.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Arabic, history, anthropology, or a related field, with a strong academic record and expertise in Arabic and Islamic religious formulae. Experience with epigraphic material, knowledge of the history of the Arabian Peninsula and the Near East, and database skills are preferred. Teaching and mentoring experience at the MA level is desirable. Proficiency in English for academic communication and publication is required, and candidates must be willing and able to conduct fieldwork in Saudi Arabia.

The position is a one-year contract starting as early as September 1, 2026, with the possibility of extension until April 2028. Remuneration follows salary scale PD1, and staff benefits include training opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, a bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.
