About this position

The Institute of Applied Mechanics at Technische Universität Braunschweig is seeking a Research Associate (PhD student, m/f/d) in the field of Data-Driven Mechanics. This position is part of the Division for Data-driven Modelling of Mechanical Systems, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Henning Wessels. The group’s research is at the intersection of continuum solid mechanics, machine learning, and uncertainty quantification, with current interests including scientific and physics-informed machine learning, parameter identification, model discovery, statistical model updating, multi-scale modelling, generative modelling, and additive manufacturing.

The successful candidate will design, implement, and test computational methods in data-driven mechanics, publish research findings, participate in national and international conferences, and contribute to teaching and student supervision. The position is initially for two years, with the opportunity to pursue a doctorate. Applicants should have a strong background in continuum solid mechanics, experience in machine learning (ideally including Bayesian statistics), and strong coding skills in Python or Matlab (Julia is a plus). Excellent English skills are required; German is advantageous but not mandatory. A Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field is essential.
