Postdoctoral Researcher in the Psychology of Collective Punishment (100%)

The Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral researcher to join the project "The Psychology of Collective Punishment: Impact on Well-Being, Conflict-Proneness, and the Role of Shared Identity in Palestinian Communities in the Occupied Palestinian Territories." This research, led by Prof. Antoine Roblain (ULB) and Dr. Zacharia Bady (Université de Lausanne), aims to empirically investigate the psychological effects of collective punishment on Palestinian communities, focusing on well-being, conflict-proneness, and the dynamics of shared identity. The project integrates both individual and communal levels of analysis and employs a mixed-methods approach, including cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. The research will provide critical insights into the mechanisms driving both hostility and peaceful engagement in conflict zones, with a particular emphasis on the interplay between oppression and resistance. The successful candidate will contribute to all aspects of the project, including data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings through presentations and publications. There are no teaching obligations associated with this position. The position is based at the Center for Social and Cultural Psychology at ULB, located in Brussels, Belgium. The successful applicant will receive a 20-month mobility grant, starting February 1, 2026. The grant is not funded by an EU programme. ULB offers a dynamic, multicultural academic environment with opportunities for professional development. The university is committed to equal opportunity and encourages applications from women and candidates with a migration background. Eligibility and Requirements: Applicants must hold a PhD in social psychology, sociology, or a closely related field, obtained within the last 8 years. Candidates must not have resided in Belgium for more than 2 years in the past 3 years. Research interest or expertise in migration studies and experience with mixed-methods research are required. Candidates should have a strong understanding of the historical, political, and social context of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. Fluency in English is required; knowledge of French and/or Arabic is an asset. Teamwork skills are essential. Application Process: Applications should be submitted as a single PDF file including: a copy of passport/ID, university diplomas, a motivation letter, full CV (with PhD thesis title, publications, and conference presentations), three representative publications, and contact details for two referees. Send applications and inquiries to Prof. Antoine Roblain at [email protected] . The application deadline is December 8, 2025.
