PhD Opportunities in Battery Performance, Safety, and Next-Generation Energy Storage Systems at Universitat Politècnica de València
The Battery Research Group at the CMT–Clean Mobility & Thermofluids laboratory, Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), announces four new PhD thesis openings. These positions focus on advancing battery performance, safety, and next-generation energy storage systems, combining experimental, diagnostic, and modeling approaches. Research topics include the performance and safety of lithium-ion cells manufactured with recycled materials, prototyping and experimental validation of high-performance battery systems for aeronautical applications, the impact of electric arcing on lithium-ion battery safety, and early detection and hazard assessment in lithium-ion BESS using mobile gas sensing and predictive modeling.
Supervisors for these projects include Carlos Micó Reche, César Leonardo Carvallo, Javier Monsalve, Javier Marco, José Vicente Pastor, and Antonio Garcia (Full Professor at UPV). The research will involve hands-on experimental work, advanced diagnostics, post-mortem analysis, coin-cell assembly, benchmarking, thermal runaway studies, module integration, thermal management, safety assessment, digital twin validation, and the development of early-warning frameworks for real BESS safety.
Applicants should have a background in Engineering Physics or a related engineering discipline and a strong interest in battery technologies, safety, and energy systems. The group encourages applications from candidates eligible for EU doctoral funding programmes. Funding details are not specified, but eligibility for EU doctoral funding is important.
To apply, contact the relevant supervisor via the provided email addresses for each project. Prepare your CV and motivation letter, and indicate your eligibility for EU doctoral funding. For more information, visit the LinkedIn profile of Antonio Garcia or the official UPV website.
