Fully Funded PhD Positions in Computational Biology, Microbiome, and AI in Health at King's College London

King's College London is offering two fully funded PhD positions in computational biology, microbiome research, and AI in health as part of the EPSRC DRIVE-Health programme. These interdisciplinary projects are ideal for candidates interested in systems biology, host–microbe interactions, machine learning, and precision medicine. The PRISM project focuses on understanding the gut–immunome–bone marrow axis in myeloid neoplasms, integrating multi-omics data (gut metagenomics, bone marrow scRNA-seq, genomics) with advanced AI methods such as graph neural networks and biological network modelling. The goal is to enhance disease stratification and uncover causal mechanisms in immune–microbial interactions, contributing to personalized immunotherapies and infection-prevention strategies. The iCHAMP project investigates the complex interplay between host genetics, the gut microbiome, and environmental factors in healthy ageing. Using AI and computational modelling, the project aims to map genetic influences on microbial metabolism and identify protective microbial functions against age-related decline. The research will develop digital twin models to forecast individual responses to interventions, supporting clinicians with data-driven insights for longevity and resilience. Both projects are supervised by Dr Saeed Shoaie (primary supervisor), with Dr Cheng Zhang and Professor Claire Steves as co-supervisors. The research environment is described as supportive, interdisciplinary, and inspiring, offering opportunities to collaborate across biosciences, computer science, mathematics, statistics, and data science. The studentships are open to Home and International applicants, with tuition fees fully covered and a generous stipend of £25,403.40 per year, plus up to £20,000 for research consumables and conferences over four years. Applicants must meet English language requirements (IELTS Band D) and hold or expect a first or upper second class degree in a relevant discipline. International students are responsible for their own visa arrangements and Immigration Health Surcharge.
