The Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) at Ruhr University Bochum is offering a PhD position for research on 'Humanitarian Practices of Aid Delivery and LGBTQI+ Issues.' The successful candidate will join a vibrant interdisciplinary research environment focused on humanitarian studies, international law, and social science. The position is funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation and offers a monthly scholarship of 1,920 EUR net, with possible family allowances and top-ups, for up to three years.
The research project, 'Fraught Vulnerabilities – Practices of Inclusion and Exclusion of LGBTQI+ People in Humanitarian Crises,' centers on the inclusion and exclusion of LGBTQI+ persons in humanitarian crises, with a particular emphasis on donor funding policies and their impact on aid strategies. The candidate will conduct desk research, review academic and policy literature, analyze data, and produce high-quality publications for both academic and practitioner audiences. Key research areas include analyzing donor and recipient-state funding policies, examining how humanitarian actors conceptualize vulnerability and inclusion, identifying gaps between policy statements and actual implementation, and mapping legal and sociopolitical contexts affecting aid delivery to LGBTQI+ communities.
The position involves collaboration with other researchers, support for current networks, and participation in teaching and external funding applications. Applicants should have a Master's degree in social sciences or a related field, strong knowledge of international development and humanitarian systems, and a keen interest in LGBTQI+ issues.
