PhD in Silicon Metal Production via Electrochemical Conversion – Environmental, Chemical, Materials Engineering

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS), in collaboration with the ARC Research Hub for Critical Energy Separation Materials (CREST) and Element Zero, is offering a fully funded PhD opportunity focused on developing next-generation pathways for silicon metal production from low-cost feedstock via electrochemical conversion in molten salts. The successful candidate will be based at UTS’s Centre for Technology in Water and Wastewater (CTWW), Faculty of Engineering and IT, and will work closely with Element Zero’s team, contributing to greener metal manufacturing and resource recovery aligned with the CREST Hub’s circular materials vision. The project will be supervised by Professor Ho Kyong Shon, Associate Professor Sherub Phuntsho, and Associate Professor Gayathri Naidu, with strong industry engagement. The research will focus on innovative technologies for silicon metal manufacturing, resource recovery, and advanced materials characterisation, supporting the development of sustainable solutions for the green energy future. The scholarship offers AUD $50,000 per annum (tax-free) for 3.5 years, plus up to $9,500 for travel and project costs. Applicants must be Australian citizens or current Permanent Resident visa holders with a minimum of a master's degree or a bachelor's degree with Honours (Distinction) in environmental engineering, civil & environmental engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or materials engineering. Experience in electrochemistry and advanced materials characterisation is highly desirable.
