Doctoral Researcher in Wireless Navigation and Satellite Positioning (DSII)

Tampere University is offering a Doctoral Researcher position in Wireless Navigation as part of the Doctoral School of Industry Innovations (DSII). The position is based in the Electrical Engineering unit within the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, and is closely linked to an industrial partner, u-Blox. The research project focuses on developing scalable and robust satellite-based positioning frameworks by integrating GNSS and emerging LEO-PNT signals with distributed artificial intelligence and multimodal sensor data. The successful candidate will enroll as a PhD student and participate in all activities required for a doctoral thesis, including attending lectures, writing publications, and contributing to project deliverables and meetings. The role offers a unique blend of academic and industrial experience, with time split between both environments. Supervision is provided by a team with deep expertise in wireless positioning, communications, signal processing, and hardware systems. The position is initially for two years, with annual renewal possible up to 2029 based on performance. Applicants must hold an MSc in a relevant engineering field and demonstrate strong Matlab or Python programming skills. Knowledge of GNSS, wireless navigation, and machine learning is desirable, and candidates should be motivated to pursue research in satellite positioning. If the degree was obtained outside Finland, an official English certificate is required. The starting salary is approximately 2700 EUR per month, with increases based on experience and progress. Staff benefits include occupational health care, flexible working hours, sports facilities, and campus discounts. The research environment is collaborative and well-equipped, located at the Tampere Hervanta campus. The DSII program supports doctoral students with training and peer support, fostering skills for agile, customer-oriented research and development. Tampere is a vibrant academic hub in Finland, offering a dynamic living environment and a strong entrepreneurial community. Applications must be submitted online by 17 November 2025, with all documents in English and PDF format. For further information, contact Professors Jari Nurmi and Simona Lohan.
