PhD Position in Applied Mathematics: Extended Shallow Water Models for Free-Surface Flows
Ghent University, a leading institution in Belgium, is offering a full-time PhD position in Applied Mathematics within the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics at the Faculty of Sciences. The department is renowned for its high-quality education and groundbreaking research in applied mathematics, computer science, and statistics, and is located on the green Campus Sterre in Ghent.
This doctoral fellowship is part of the Numerical Mathematics group and focuses on research related to extended shallow water models for the accurate and efficient simulation of free-surface flows. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Julian Koellermeier and co-supervision of Prof. Dr. Marnix Van Daele. The main research tasks include model derivation, model analysis, and the development and implementation of numerical methods for simulating free-surface flows. The position also involves collaboration with international researchers and presenting research findings at international conferences.
The PhD project aims to produce research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, which will form the basis of a thesis leading to a PhD degree at Ghent University. The candidate may also undertake limited teaching duties for undergraduate and graduate courses, tailored to their skills and interests.
Applicants must hold a master’s degree in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Computational Engineering, Computer Science, or an equivalent field. Essential qualifications include a solid background in numerical methods for partial differential equations and numerical analysis, basic knowledge or interest in fluid dynamics and free-surface flows, experience with scientific programming (Python, MATLAB, C++), and strong communication and writing skills in English. Experience in international collaboration is considered an asset.
The fellowship is offered for an initial period of 12 months, extendable up to a maximum of 48 months after a positive evaluation. The salary is 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, determined by family status and seniority, and is tax-free. Ghent University staff enjoy numerous benefits, including training opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. The intended starting date is flexible but must be no later than October 2026.
To apply, candidates should submit a single PDF containing a motivation letter, detailed CV, contact information for at least two academic references, transcripts from bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and a copy of their diploma (if available) via email to Prof. Dr. Julian Koellermeier at [email protected]. Applications received before 21 March 2026 will be given full consideration, but the position will remain open until filled. Ghent University encourages applications from underrepresented groups and maintains an equal opportunities and diversity policy.
