Postdoctoral Scholar in AI Applications for Food Processing and Supply Chains

The University of Washington's College of Engineering, Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering, is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to join Dr. Juming Tang’s research group in Seattle, WA. This position focuses on innovative research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, food processing, and supply chain technologies. The successful candidate will contribute to projects involving microwave processing, sensor development, and AI-driven solutions for enhancing transparency and efficiency in cold food supply chains. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in mechanical, food, electrical, computer engineering, industrial systems engineering, or a closely related discipline. Essential qualifications include strong programming and simulation skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R), hands-on experience with sensors, data acquisition systems, IoT, and AI tools, as well as a robust publication record and excellent communication skills. Experience with pilot-scale processing systems, physics-based computer simulations, and prior work with food or biomaterials is highly valued. The postdoctoral scholar will lead and participate in research and technology transfer activities, supervise and mentor graduate students, and engage with a broad network of collaborators and industrial partners. The appointment is for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year. The base salary ranges from $80,172 to $84,000 per year, with benefits provided according to the University of Washington's policies and the UAW 4121 collective bargaining agreement.
