PhD Fellowship in Translation Studies (English-Spanish) at Ghent University
The Translation and Culture (TRACE) research group at Ghent University is offering a four-year, full-time PhD fellowship in Translation Studies. This predoctoral fellowship is designed for candidates interested in pursuing a doctoral dissertation focused on translation between English and Spanish, in either direction. The position encourages applicants to propose research projects that may engage with areas such as philosophy, the novel of ideas (from the twentieth century onwards), film and ideology, feminism and post-feminism, or other relevant themes. Multilingual projects that include Dutch, French, or German alongside Spanish and English are also welcome. The successful candidate will be supervised by Professors Jeroen Vandaele and Lieve Jooken, whose research profiles are available online. The fellowship consists of an initial 12-month contract, extendable up to a maximum of 48 months upon positive evaluation. The earliest possible start date is 1 February 2026. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Translation Studies, Literary Studies, Comparative Literature, Language and Literature, Cultural Studies, History, Philosophy) and have completed an excellent Master’s thesis. Fluency in both English and Spanish is required, along with strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. The application process requires submission of a CV (with two academic referees), diploma, transcripts, a motivation letter (including a research proposal paragraph), and a single-authored academic writing sample (up to 8,000 words). If the diploma is not in English, Dutch, French, or German, a translation must be provided. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview and must submit a brief research proposal (max. 750 words) prior to the interview. Ghent University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity. For more information, applicants can contact the supervisors directly.
