MSCA PhD Opening in Theoretical Catalysis (PRIME LEAP) at University of Milano-Bicocca

The University of Milano-Bicocca is offering a PhD position in Theoretical Catalysis as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network (MSCA-DN) project PRIME LEAP. This European research and training initiative unites leading universities, research centers, and industry partners to advance next-generation electrified chemical processes. PRIME LEAP focuses on the sustainable and efficient conversion of methane, a major component of natural gas and a by-product of steam cracking, into value-added chemicals using plasma and catalytic technologies. The project supports Europe’s climate and sustainability goals by promoting greener, more resilient chemical manufacturing. The successful candidate will join a vibrant international consortium and conduct research on modeling single-atom catalysts for acetylene hydrogenation. The position is supervised by Professor Livia Giordano and offers tailored training in plasma science, advanced catalysis, digital process control, and sustainability assessment. Candidates will benefit from world-class infrastructure and opportunities for international secondments across the consortium, gaining interdisciplinary expertise and contributing to breakthrough solutions for the chemical sector. Applicants must hold an M.Sc. degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, and demonstrate excellent command of English (C1 level). Eligibility criteria include not having earned a doctoral degree, not having resided or carried out main activities in Italy for more than 12 months in the past 3 years, and meeting all admission requirements for the PhD program at University of Milano-Bicocca. Full-time commitment to research is required, with no teaching activities or additional income allowed. Candidates must agree to sign intellectual property agreements and maintain confidentiality. International mobility during the fellowship is mandatory and may account for up to 30% of the contract duration. The fellowship is funded through Horizon Europe - MSCA and provides a temporary gross research fellowship for 36 months, including a living allowance of €137,575.08, a mobility allowance of €25,560.00, and a family allowance of €17,820.00 (if applicable), paid in monthly installments and subject to tax deductions. The selection process involves initial screening by the supervisor, interviews for shortlisted candidates, and final selection based on CV, graduation mark, relevance of MSc thesis and scientific outputs, prior work experience, and motivation. To apply, submit your application form, CV, motivation letter, and copies of relevant diplomas to [email protected]. For further details, visit the project website at https://qclab.mater.unimib.it or the position link at https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu//jobs/417164 . The application deadline is 31 March 2026.
